To help OP out a little bit I've dabbled with Swappa after getting banned from ebay a few months back. There's no listing fees, insertion fees, or final value fees on items under a certain threshold. I want to say it's $50? The downside is there's 1/10th of the traffic on there as there is on ebay so shit takes forever to move.

The best way is to as some have said, cut out the middle man (ebay/etsy/amazon) and try retailing directly. Go after items with good margins, or convenience items where people wont go out of there way to find alternatives just to save 10 cents. I sell on eBay and probably keep around 70% of the sale value. Listing fees - £0.50 - £2 a listing. Shipping is covered by buyer. eBay takes 10%. No PayPal fees at all in UK. I just have to cover some packaging, tape, bubblewrap etc. I can more than double my money on any sale.
