to be fair, almost nobody used ethereum then. At least he only sold 25%, rather than almost 100% like Vlad Zamfir. It was almost 3 years after the initial proposal. He must have been mentally exhausted, imagine working on something for 3 years and it's a ghost town + the money is starting to run out.
Nobody expected it to catch on the way it started to, a year later.
