He looks at the historical evidence of early Islam and it all points towards being invented by Caliph Abdul Malik, the 5th Umayyad Caliph. The first references to Muhammad, Islam and Muslims in Arabic come from his reign and his coins/buildings. These were all 70 years after Muhammad died. The Hadiths have zero historical credibility (and written in 833, 200 years after Muhammad) and the Sunna is effectively written by Jewish/Zoroastrian scholars because Arabs had no culture of scholarship at the time. The earliest mosques had their quiblas (direction of prayer) set to Petra, not Mecca. Mecca bares no relation to the description of the 'holy city' in the Quran. Guess where Malik was from? Medina, near Mecca. Finally, the earliest Qurans disagree with each other and there are over 800 changes and alterations between the earliest Qurans and the modern Quran, canonised in the 1920s.
