Architectural engineer here. Many architects have turned into glorified project managers and accountants. They know nothing technical, even with all the advanced modeling and cool parametric design options they are completely dull and bland, just ploping down different cladding systems next to and on top of eachother. There's no art involved anymore, no style, no theme, no heart.

Pic related is a metal panel we saw on the drawings and told the architect and owner this wasnt going to work across such a tall span. We have nothing to do with aestetics, but sometimes try to help. We were ignored. Now it looks a thousand different kinds of fucked depending on the light and angle you look at it. The owner refuses to accept the condition now heh.

To be fair all critical architecture has always been about making structures as fast & cheap as possible.
Look from the aqueducts of southern europe, the great wall, the inca cities. All of them are bland, flat as possible & lack a significant amount of grandeur for most building. Only religious, home of the wealthy and high government buildings have ever been invested to look as prominent & decadent as possible.
The new building isn't exactly at odds with the other architecture of the area,. Its Sweden, not Vienna.

Many buildings in Europe got damaged/destroyed during ww2 and had to be rebuilt quickly with cheap designs, as restoration of the old style would’ve been to time consuming and expensive. This led to a shift inarchitectural taste in the new generation and helped cause acceptance for ahit architecture.

The heating and cooling have changed, plumbing and electricity. The amount of regulation is also something that makes certain things impractical.
People were still building nice stuff by the late 19th century but then the Modernist movement started in Europe and started having little to no detail in any architecture

Basically, the modernist philosophy was that we don't need all the fancy and detailed facades, pediments, arches, etc. They just felt if we can keep it as minimal as possible while still functioning then they're good.

They always have. The thing is architects dont sit around with pen and paper coming up with grand beautiful designs, instead they copy paste cad and models.
Ornament has also changed on buildings, it used to be used in small bits to accent the building. Modernists use the entire facade for ornament and it has become a box competition instead of inserting geometric shapes and sculptures here and there for decorative effect.
