Lake of Fire hell is after the final judgment. The latter could be what the pope is talking about and is suggesting that souls cast into the lake of fire (after being removed from sheol) are simply destroyed there. There were some ancient Christian communities that believed things like this but they were destroyed by the Muslim locusts
