Actually I'm Bulgarian and was thinking about that part of Europe when I replied. You are correct that we've meshed with our neighbours (mostly Greeks and Turks) for so long, we share many similarities, but I dare you to call a Bulgarian a Greek, or a Serb, or a Russian and you will hear 1000 word diatribe on how unique we are. I imagine all our neighbours would react in the same way.

Christianity for Bulgaria specifically served a tribes (slav and proto-Bulgarian) integrating purpose, so it helped establish the country; later on, it kept our identity under 200 years Byzantian and 500 Ottoman rule so that we could restore our country (for the 2nd and 3rd time, respectively.
