What is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused of? Here are the key facts.
There are four, possibly five, separate scandals currently lapping over the walls of Benjamin Netanyahu’s once-unassailable premiership of Israel. The man not long ago dubbed “King Bibi”, after his local nickname, has never looked weaker in sharp contrast to his growing stature on the international stage.
Here is what we know about each case:
CASE 1000 (THE “GIFTS AFFAIR”):
What is it?
Israeli police believe Netanyahu accepted around 1 million shekels ($280,000) worth of gifts such champagne, cigars and jewelry from a number of wealthy benefactors -- including Israeli-born Hollywood film producer Arnon Milchan and Australian billionaire James Packer.
In return for these benefits, police say, he argued strongly for new visa rules that would provide generous tax relief for Milchan. Packer’s gifts were allegedly furnished for similar reasons, although the police did not say that Netanyahu had pushed for favouable treatment for him.
Where does it stand?
After their investigation concluded in February, police recommended to the state prosecution that they charge the prime minister for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. They said Milchan should also be indicted. The prosecution are by no means bound to the police’s recommendation. It is likely to be around two months before they make a call.
What does Netanyahu say?
Netanyahu denies all the allegations in this affair, and has maintained throughout that they were simply gifts between friends, with nothing expected in return.
CASE 2000 (QUID-PRO-QUO):
What is it?
Police believe that Netanyahu offered to intercede into the affairs of one newspaper in order to give commercial benefit to its competitor. In 2017, sensational recordings leaked in which Netanyahu and Yedioth Aharonot owner Noni Mozes are apparently heard striking a quid-pro-quo arrangement in which Netanyahu would urge US casino mogul Sheldon Adelson to trim the weekend edition of his free Israel Hayom broadsheet -- a deadly competitor to Yedioth -- in return for more positive coverage of the PM and government.
Where does it stand?
Police have also recommended to the state prosecutor to lay charges on Netanyahu for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in this case. Mozes should also be indicted, they said.
What does Netanyahu say?
Netanyahu strongly denies the allegation he offered any favors in return for flattering coverage. His associates briefed Israeli media that he had recorded the conversations himself in order to catch out Mozes.
CASE 4000 (TELECOM GIANT)
What is it?
In just one part of a broader corruption investigation combing through the business activity of Shaul Elovitch, the controlling shareholder in Israel’s Bezeq communications giant. Police reportedly suspect that Elovitch was fed insider information from the communications ministry by two close associates of Netanyahu -- Shlomo “Momo” Filber and Nir Hefetz. Netanyahu was communications minister at the time. In a similar arrangement to that alleged in Case 2000, media reports citing police say that Elovitch put pressure on editors and journalists at the popular website to cast Netanyahu and his wife Sara in a positive light and downplay negative stories about the government in exchange for concessions benefitting his telecom company, Bezeq.
Where does it stand?
Police continue to investigate. However, they were given a massive boost by convincing Filber, the ex-communications ministry chief, to turn state witness. Israeli media speculate he will could give damning evidence against Netanyahu.
What does Netanyahu say?
Netanyahu branded this probe as a “balloon that will be popped” and a media-driven “witch hunt.”
The other chief suspects have also denied wrongdoing.

CASE 1270 (THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL DEAL)
What is it?
The details of this case hurtled out of the blue in mid-February, and for the first time ensnared top members of Israel’s judiciary. Judge Hila Gerstl told police that in 2015, Nir Hefetz (a former personal spokesman for the Netanyahu family and suspect in Case 4000), offered her the job of Attorney General through an intermediary. In exchange, she would be expected to use her new position to dismiss a strong case brewing against Netanyahu’s wife Sara, over illegal household spending (she was later indicted). Gerstl told her associate, Esther Hayut -- now Israel’s chief justice -- about the approach but the two never reported it to police.
Where does it stand?
Police are still gathering evidence in this case. With Hefetz under arrest, they have ample opportunity to dig.
What does Netanyahu say?
Netanyahu categorically denied asking Hefetz to put such a proposal to Gerstl, and doubts that Hefetz would have ever thought of doing such a thing of his own accord.
CASE 3000 (THE SUBMARINE AFFAIR)
What is it?
Police reportedly suspect bribes were solicited during negotiations between German industrial giant ThyssenKrupp and the Israeli government over the purchase of new submarines for Israel's navy. There have been several reports that Netanyahu will be questioned in this case, but as of yet, police have not named him as a suspect. However several intimate associates of Netanyahu’s, including former personal lawyer David Shimron, have been arrested. Yitzhak Molcho, a personal envoy for the premier, was also questioned. The two men, who also represented the German firm’s interests in Israel, are suspected of using their positions and association with the premier to advance the deal despite pushback from the Ministry of Defense.
Political rivals say this case is a ticking time bomb for Netanyahu, but without evidence.
Where does it stand?
Although this investigation has been running for a while, there is no indication it is near a conclusion. Germany and Israel inked a memorandum of understanding permitting the deal to go forward, with a caveat that it could be scrapped if police conclude any wrongdoing in the affair.

“The justice ministry has already made it clear that the prime minister is not suspected of anything,” Netanyahu said in a statement last month after yet another report he is set to be questioned.
