Increases in wages doesn't magically create people to do jobs where there aren't enough people. Even if it did the increase in wages has to come from somewhere. It puts a huge squeeze on small businesses and sectors of the economy which rely on relatively unskilled labour. High wages can only be supported with a strong economy which won't exist with the current projected demographic changes. With the damage to the economy and the destruction of jobs you are going to have a lot more unemployed. The greater competition for people going into jobs will drive the wages for those jobs down and reduce workers rights.

Japan already is tightly knit with low crime. Forcing people to work until their death, undoing all forms of social security, rampant unemployment and homelessness and the exposing of class divisions will severely harm social cohesion.

The problem is not just that their is going to be a population crisis within the current generation it's that Japanese people are not having enough children to maintain the current population which unless dealt with with carry on through successive generations. Automation even if it were good enough a solution for the crisis approaching now the generation after that is going to be even smaller, and the next after that requiring an ever increase level of automation which isn't sustainable.

They have the worlds 3rd largest economy. It's huge. However their economy has been flagging these last few decades. They are losing ground to America and all projections show that continuing. Unless something unforeseen happens there won't be a yet.
