I have only lived in California from 1988-1994, had a very pleasing time. i also can't say whether 70's, 80's etc were better.
Yes riots sucked but I think it would be better than all the crime during the 50s. I was actually in LA during the riots.

Crime was mostly associated with violence, yes such as Black Dahlia. Many high profile murders, especially of women. Wouldn't say mob crime during the 1950's hit California hard but it definitely was of impact.
