Excuse my possible ignorance, and I am in now way a communist, but even if communism started off with a reasonable leader (most countries started with brutal dictators like Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot) could the country thrive or would it eventually succumb to a communist country's vulnerability?

Being killed for having a set of beliefs or being a member of a group with a set of beliefs is not the same as being starved/killed for no reason.
