Liberal candidate Rebecca Dallet has won election to the Wisconsin Supreme Court, according to Decision Desk. Dallet defeated her conservative opponent for the open seat, Michael Screnock easily, and her victory will cut the conservative majority on the court from 5-2 to just 4-3.

Didn't know there was an election until 2:30 today. Also not registered with an updated address so I can't vote where I am.

The conservative majority is down to 4-3, with a chance to flip in 2020.
There’s another race next year, but that one is a bit murkier. Abrahamson has been on the court for over 50 years, but she’ll be 85 next year, so I don’t know if she’ll run again. Justices serve 10-year terms, so I highly doubt she’ll run again even if Dems win the gubernatorial race in November.
If they do, she could run again, then retire in the middle of her term, since the governor gets to appoint a replacement. The replacement gets to serve until the first year that doesn’t have another judicial election, which means if she were to retire in 2024, the Democrat-appointed replacement would serve until 2029 since there will be races every year from 2025–2028.
We need term limits on justices, and I think we tried, but it didn’t work. It just so happens that the only two members of the court that have served more than 15 years are liberal, so don’t be surprised if that changes to force Roggensack out.

The races are officially non-partisan, but we all know that’s not the case.
We’re pretty much even, but this is a state that voted for Walker three (3) times, gave Republicans a supermajority in the State Legislature, voted for conservative justices recently, voted for plenty of Republicans in national races, and voted for Trump in 2016.
The fact that we shifted so far back to the left in a year and a half is absolutely astounding, it’s a complete disaster. It’s not because Republicans aren’t doing conservative things, it’s because the Republican president is very unpopular.

It is a lot easier to bus people to the polls in these smaller elections. They go door to door in the hood and get people to go vote. When it is a general election the democrats resources are spread much thinner. It's really pretty simple.

There's a lack of motivation on the right because the establishment GOP and entrenched local politicians are not on board the Trump train. No one wants to show up for the old school GOP, that party is D.E.A.D. The Pennsylvania special election showed us this. And that worries me. Trump is just one man. He has his supporters (i.e. us) but many of them haven't really been taking charge at the local level. They show up for rallies, but not local Party meetings. And almost none of them have decided to run for office. So the fossils of yesteryear remain and basically function as black holes of doom for any enthusiasm. I hear the Democrats have similar problems. But I would be most pessimistic regarding out nation's future if the art of governance became a race to the bottom, where the only reason anyone wins an election is because the other guy was an even bigger mess.
