It really feels like California is a caste society/modern day Brazil. When I look at San Francisco and Los Angeles, I see three worlds: The elite neighbourhoods (Beverly Hills, Malibu), the neighbourhoods with people who are pretending to be rich but are actually poor (making really good salaries but can't afford the outrageous housing prices, commute times, food prices etc) and the downright miles of ghetto (Oakland, Inglewood, Compton). When I look at regular America cities like Seattle or Omaha, I don't see the same amount of poverty.

Seattle is bad. Can't say much about Omaha though. Food is cheap in California though. Fresh produce is easy to come by, and I can walk alleys and pick over hanging fruit from trees year around.
