Not always trustworthy: the Batallón de San Patricio (St. Patrick’s Battalion) was a battalion of Irish emigrant deserters from the US army who placed loyalty to their religion ahead of loyalty to their adopted homeland (that had given them shelter and employment) to fight for Mexico against their former comrades. Still celebrated in Mexico today and at least as recently as 1997 in the Republic of Ireland.
