They're basically kept alive for medical research and experimentation to further knowledge of the condition, and basically kept by the family as a pet so they have something to walk away from their failed pregnancy with instead of nothing.
I personally find it cruel they're kept alive, but most people see it from the opposite perspective so not much can really be done about it as long as families have the resources to keep them alive.
