oh i can answer this, it's not as cool as you would think a lot of the letter agencies and executive people are terrified of disastrous happenings - not just nuclear weapons, but biological/chemical weapons, pandemics, huge natural disasters, anything that would cause a massive breakdown in social order and threaten the stability of the government so they run tests and simulations to train themselves for such events constantly, always bigger and bigger in scope. i can imagine that requires a massive as fuck budget the worst part is that despite all this supposed disaster response training, it doesn't seem to translate to actual competency in real scenarios

Want to export your manufacturing base to Asia to cut the bottom line? Smart for profit margins and goods prices in the very short term. In the mid to long term your own country gets higher unemployment, less economic activity, more debt, more social unrest and national security is compromised. In the end tax rates gets hiked on everybody in a desperate attempt to try and balance the books. And you can't just keep fleeing to other countries either. Eventually they're all fucked or have enough.
Light crude has been what the U.S. is getting from its fracking operations. This could dampen domestic drilling demand, even if refining does increase.
