Michigan is shit. Handgun registration, high taxes, and lots of regulation. I'm self employed and moved from Michigan to East Tennessee. I save ~$12,000 in taxes alone.

I lived in ND for a year working for Fedex back in 2015. Cold as hell over there but the people were generally very nice.

Its good for homesteading because of its few restrictions on cottage industry (businesses run out of home) and Sole Proprietor companies.
And arguably, depending on how you want to go about establishing your homestead, if you keep your house on the low value side, then they will evaluate it fairly low for tax purposes.
