We had an official defense agreement with the south to defend them in case of aggression from the communist north. Regardless of whether or not such an agreement was a good idea in the first place, they were counting in us to keep our word according to the terms of the treaty and if you can’t follow through on your commitments then it makes it harder to conduct negotiation/diplomacy with other nations later on down the road.
