Simply put, scientists have researched homosexuality and it does not meet the criteria of a mental illness as it does not inherently cause distress to all those who have it causes them to independently desire medical treatment. Yes, many gay people are shamed into pseudoscientific quack cures by sometimes religious elements, but that doesn't mean it actually is causing harm emotionally to themselves or others, apart from others treating them like shit for being gay.
