Iran wanted to control their own oil. With a few short lived exceptions, the Sauds have let the western world control their oil. As long as we keep the Saud family in power and they let us weaponize the oil market against our enemies like we did to financially ruin the Soviets, things remain good between us. Even 9/11 being primarily conducted by Saudi Arabians didn't spoil the relationship.
