Mercury, JSTARS, Nightwatch and Rivet Join were observed taking off, but kept their transponders off until it came time for in flight refueling. 4 other AWACS were also seen along with 10 refuel tankers over the Continental United States.
General Consensus is the USA is at DEFCON 3. You just don't see that many strategic assets at the same time. We also had a Skyking around Midnight.

Status as of this morning
Mercury was being refueled over Missippii, before turning off its transponder. No sign of JSTARS or Nightwatch, but considering how many refuel tankers are up atm, they are probably still out there somewhere. On that note, there are 9 Aeriel refuel tankers over the US which is no change from the operations tempo of last night.
Increased US Strategic presence in the mediteranean sector with three KC-10 Refuel tankers heading out over Southern France, Spain and Cyprus.
US definitely still at DEFCON 3, so get in here and get /comfy/ guys.
We tend to notice when things get more tense. Its not like its a big secret the USA is up to something.
On that note, two of the KC-10's in the European theater just turned off their transponders. I doubt they landed, since the US does not have an airbase in France.

Lot more NATO activity today. yesterday was pretty quiet over Europe. Saudi Royal Airforce luxury air yacht taking off from Paris, and UK Royal Airforce VIP transport taking off from Warsaw. But that is not as interesting as the US Refuel Tanker over Hungary for some reason. Its in prime position to provide a relay for F-16's out of Ramstein Airbase, especially if that other Refuel tanker south of Cyprus is still around. NATO also has an AWACS up over Poland.

It's a "Flash" broadcast. Absolute emergency. America is under a Pearl Harbor like-attack broadcast or very serious emergency.
It's called a "Foxtrot Flash" message. As far as anyone I have talked with knows, one has never been transmitted, not even on 9/11.
Based on regular and Skyking traffic on HFGCS, the message would likely start with "Foxtrot, Foxtrot" or "Foxtrot Flash, Foxtrot Flash" or something very similar. What would follow would probably a passphrase or a brief alphanumeric character set.

Probably. Russia's options are limited to doing nothing or escalating by causing major losses to US and allied ships, planes and bases.

it's a safety thing. most of the time you want to have it on because air defences are long range and will fuck up your day. any plane without a transponder signal is considered hostile in any territory. they turn off the transponder when they're taking hostile actions like probing your air defence/tracking capabilities and surveillance.

Average flight time from the USA to Middle East is about 10-12 hours. So if that huge tanking fleet was step 1 of a move by the US, we should be seeing action in in a few hours. If the US follows standard OP, it would open with cruise missile strike at 2 AM local time targeting command/control and radar sites, followed by the strategic bombers.
