Tesla insists Model X driver was at fault in fatal crash

>When Tesla revealed that Autopilot was engaged during the fatal Model X crash in Mountain View, it only said that the vehicle's "logs show[ed] that no action was taken" even though the driver had time to react. Now, the automaker has issued another statement much stronger than that, saying that the only way the accident could have happened was if the driver (identified as Apple engineer Walter Huang) wasn't paying attention.
>The family's lawyer believes that the company is doubling down on putting the blame on Huang in order to distract from their concerns about his vehicle's Autopilot. Mike Fong, one of their attorneys, told ABC 7 that the sensors in Huang's car misread the road's lane lines and that its braking system failed to detect a stationary object on its way. Those are presumably the reasons why, on several occasions, his car veered towards the barrier where he crashed. While it sounds like the family is gearing up to sue, Fong said he doesn't expect to file a lawsuit until after the National Transportation Safety Board is fully done with its investigation.

I’d also like to add, fuck electric vehicle. Those shits are a death trap. A small accident can engulf the vehicle in flames because of the batteries leaking. Fuck lefties and their renewable energy memes.

Yeah I was wondering why the car looks like it was fucking eaten in the front with just one crash into a barrier.

i know of no other car that warns you when a fire is about to happen.

The point is to him to not pay attention and work anyway.

Jesus.

I will never understand why people trust a fucking rock to drive their car for them, especially on underdeveloped technology.

I live not too far from where this accident happened, and pic related is literally everywhere I go on the road. I make sure to keep my distance from these fucking death traps.

What a lot of people don't understand about self-driving cars is that you still have to keep your hands on the wheel at all times. It isn't a butler.

>Walter Huang

Asians cant drive - period!

Well next week when you turn 65, most people will drive you to places you need to go. Don't let those waymo cars stress you out too much, your heart only has a few million beats left in it. Don't let those run out too quickly over tech you don't understand, buddy.

>What a lot of people don't understand about self-driving cars is that you still have to keep your hands on the wheel at all times. It isn't a butler

It's funny because that's the only attractive thing about self driving cars, that you don't have to drive. If you still have to pay attention as much as if you were driving, what's the fucking point?

The autopilot program used to avoid that barrier all the time until they released an update breaking the cars ability to realize that it should follow traffic instead of moving into open space (near construction, etc). This killed the driver.

t. butthurt investor
no rational person would give a machine control over their life for something they could easily do themselves. especially when it can be controlled/disabled remotely. the only people who are excited by automated vehicles are agenda 21 bugmen.

This, it shouldn't have been released if it doesn't work but Elon needed some paying beta testers.

What people are failing to understand about Tesla's stupidly named "autopilot" feature is that it's just a fucking lane assist program. It's not meant to fully drive the car all the time. They named it that stupid fucking name so now everyone thinks that Teslas drive themselves, cooks everyone breakfast, and gets a little handsy after tuesday morning mimosas. It's just a shitty camera system with some clever software. REAL auto-driving vehicles are made by Google, Intel, and other tech and car companies. NOT Tesla.

is it true that electronic cars can heavily explode, when the battery gets damaged?

Hell no I wouldn't trust my life with Tesla's autopilot. I would, however, trust my life in that Waymo van you posted, which is FAAAR more developed technology than the Tesla systems.

Cmon, Chang. You must know how common it is for those shoddy lithium ion batteries to explode. A hydrogen car would be safer than sitting on half a ton of incendiary devices.

Is that foam all over the road battery acid?

I'm not even of legal age to drink. I sometimes carpool with my friend to uni, and even he doesn't trust Tesla's bullshit, even though he interns for them.

There's literally no point in these cars if you have to stay just as alert as if you were driving a normal car. Four-way intersections without a traffic light are hilarious to watch because the computer can't make the distinction regarding who the fuck came to a stop first, so it just goes forward after coming to a complete stop. When it senses that someone's coming towards you, the car's computer stops you in the middle of the intersection while everyone glares at you.

Also, have fun never making right turns on red.

Waymo constantly runs red lights. It's been documented often.

It's almost like newer technology is still in the testing phase, and won't be ready for another few years

I'd rather have cars that run red lights on extreme occasions (which I'm sure will be fixed) than some tard on meth driving backwards on the freeway killing people

Because it's not fucking ready yet. People are expecting this new, incredibly difficult technology to just teleport to their doorstep ready to go. Dumbfuck news organizations post articles making gullible idiots online think that this technology is ready to pick up like a script at their local walgreens. CURRENT auto-driving cars need the driver to pay attention and have hands on the wheel. FUTURE cars will not once the cars have surpassed humans in terms of safety and reliability with their driving. It's not a difficult concept to grasp.

It's almost like there aren't other people on the road. Look, man, you can do whatever the fuck you want with your life, but it's a different ball game when you're putting underdeveloped technology on the streets. Don't subject other people to dangers that they haven't subscribed to.

If it's still in the testing phase, why the hell is it on the streets? This is the same thing that happened with that bridge in Florida.

Attached: 1519838985945.jpg (810x1080, 139K)

Yeah those methtards will be lining up around the block to buy a $100,000 car

Can Tesla's cars consistently pass the captcha to click all the squares with vehicles?

It's testing how well a car can handle driving on roads with unpredictable human drivers, in road conditions that aren't necessarily easy or cheap to recreate on a test course.
I'd say you make a good point though, when it comes to risking the lives of other people on the road. If the technology isn't regulated with how "developed" it is, we'll see more incidents like the Uber incident. Uber's technology isn't anywhere near the level of Intel and Google's, but they slipped through city council's fingers because the idiots running the councils didn't understand the technology well enough to know that Uber's tech wasn't as developed as other brands, and allowed them on the roads anyway.
Now thew Florida Bridge thing was some dumbass's decision to not block the road off for stress testing. 100% avoidable.

Even a $16k Toyota Corolla will try to automatically stop or swerve out of a potential accident. This is a fucking $175k car, how the fuck Tesla.

Attached: CxcXE1lMTA8PDU0ODQ4ABw1NAAwOTBMLDBcMEEwADA0XBg0XTAkCDRYCERpRU1JVTBcLFg4BDQIKDxBWTVNMEwA8VVZQTQkTBA-6 (633x352, 43K)

Can't gas cars do that? Diesel is a little better because it's not flammable.

I'm sure the end goal of all these car manufacturers is to do away with personal car ownership completely.
Have fleets of ride sharing "Ford" cars or "Waymo" cars that you can summon with an app, rather than driving yourself is a much more lucrative investment than simply manufacturing vehicles to be sold.
I'm sure when the technology is finally "there", there will be "human driver" bans during certain hours on certain roads, which will slowly expand in the coming years to a full driving ban, where fully autonomous fleets are the only vehicles allowed on the roads.

Dystopian as hell.

They're dumb as fuck and clearly don't actually work in tech. Fully automated cars will never happen outside of controlled roads. It's a joke and everyone knows it. It's the flying car if the 21st century.

>explosion
ive made fireballs bigger than that with axe and a lighter

>It's testing how well a car can handle driving on roads with unpredictable human drivers, in road conditions that aren't necessarily easy or cheap to recreate on a test course.
Too fucking bad for them. They should eat the cost to recreate the conditions instead of putting unaware people in danger.

It's some Nazi ass bullshit and only disgusting bugmen want it.

Well otherwise they have to admit that sometimes the first iteration of a program needs tweaking, and beta testing their AI control systems with humans on live roads isn't such a good idea. This would mean they would need to build closed track facilities (expensive), and take longer delivering their product when they are starved for money. A few dead humans is a small price to pay for such "progress". Just remember the first law of robotics: A robot can never harm a human, unless there is money involved.

this

I'm sure the cost of potential law suits was less than the cost of making hundreds of miles of test roads and conditions. That's just capitalism at that point. Just like how other car manufacturers weigh the cost of lawsuits vs recalls when they notice a faulty piece of hardware in their vehicles. If the law suits from the resulting injuries/deaths were to theoretically cost less than a recall, they don't do one.

The gee wiz

It even did awkward shit like this in their recent demo released by them today. It stopped in the middle of making a right hand turn because there were people on the side of the road. This kind of stupid shit would cause accidents left and right on the road. Of course they will claim its not their fault but doing stupid shit like this on the road that no one expects causes accidents and yes.. Anyone who works on this tech will tell you it wont be truly ready for the road for 5-10 years. In its current form, people are just unwitting beta testers/google street view drivers feeding data back to HQ for them to better their shit tier approach to self driving cars. If you have to be attentive and hands on the wheel at all times, you might as well drive yourself so you dont fall asleep or become inattentive. The whole point is to be engaged. So yeah, in its current form, its a gimmick/lie to get dumbasses to test/feed them data for free.

Attached: 1522342753377.jpg (1076x1052, 85K)

You've said a bunch of bullshit so far in this thread, but this is the one thing that I agree wholeheartedly with you about.

I'm guessing no one ever heard of the story when Elon tried to nigger GeoHotz into fixing his shitty self driving car and because he was such a jew he tried to rewrite the terms of the agreement on the kids birthday and assrape him. GeoHotz told Elon to fuck off and started : comma.ai/.

This. Eventually insurance agencies will not cover human drivers. I hate when people talk of the inevitability of all this "tech progress". If you say something is inevitable, it means you have lost control of that thing. We do have control over the future of technology, there are just many who are greedy fucks, or are completely naive or even batshit insane

Hey we're all human, we don't have to agree with each other 100% of the time. That's why I've been enjoying this discussion. It's always good to read and understand how other people feel about such a controversial piece of tech, so thank you for giving me your perspective.

It would be sort of nice to have self driving, but being an engineer, I can tell you that there's never a 100% guarantee of things working.

For instance, in heavy weather, what will you do? Can you trust an AI on a bridge during heavy rain, wind, or snow?

Bro, i dont have any tissues left to clean up this mess

>YOU HAVE ARRIVED AT YOUR DESTINATION

Attached: 1_As3e6U5UlrwPs55GrDoFKg[1].png (1600x804, 806K)

>We do have control over the future of technology
In an abstract, theoretical sense, sure. But practically speaking "we" do not, as in any individual person has such an insignificant level of input over the future of technology that effectively nobody does. Someone looking to get rich or make their life more convenient will develop some technology, market it, it will be eaten up because of its short term benefits, and the long term effects will be totally ignored until it is too late. Rinse and repeat with the next innovation.

Read Industrial Society and its Future. editions-hache.com/essais/pdf/kaczynski2.pdf

What's even the point in getting a self driving car if you still have to focus on the road. I'd rather just drive it myself.

Here's the thing, it doesn't have to be 100% effective. It just has to be more effective than a person, and believe me it will, eventually. It will not be long before a self-driving car has a lower probability of getting into an accident (the only metric that matters) than the average retard allowed on the road, and once that threshold is passed, it's all over.

I'm also an engineer and have worked on portions of the tech that was needed to enable self-driving car technology. You'll never see me in one of them. In its current form, "AI" is fundamentally flawed in way of completing this task. It's a statistics based (hopefully you dont hit a corner case) methodology with no solid standards. It's in beta. The units operating on the roads are for data gathering/improvements. The unwitting drivers are testers putting their lives at risk.

Until a fundamentally new approach is authored, its all statistical garbage. It wouldn't be nice as I enjoy exercising my brain and driving isn't that strenuous of a task. As for accident rates, cops need to be doing their jobs enforcing the rules of the road :
> Ticketing people who don't signal for lane changes
> People who commit illegal lane changes (cutting across 3 fucking lanes at once)
> Stop sign and red light violators and otherwise shitty drivers

Instead, they're running around trying to collect revenue. Learning how to drive and how to conduct yourself safely among others is a valuable life skill. Were taking more of them away w/ no replacement for the purpose of gimmicks :
> Software companies aren't innovating and creating new frontiers .. they're just eating up old ones w/ silly gimmick tech.

Call it what you like but I see it as over-hyped bullshit to keep the hamster wheel turning in tech. No one asked for this shit and it actually doesn't solve any pressing problem. Cruise control solves 50% of the problem w/ no fanfare... Most plebs don't even use it on the highway.

>not paying attention while driving car causes fatal crash
Congratulations, you've rediscovered ancient lost knowledge. Next we will attempt to determine if water is wet and if socialism can work.

How cucked, apathetic and retarded do you have to be to trust your life to some shitty (((Google))) AI?

Attached: 14246121215060.jpg (419x480, 31K)

You're asking the most sensible question related to this and you're correct. It's a gimmick technology being pushed to help increase the value of cars and keep some dimwit hype venture with investor cash. Cruise control does 50% of what this garbage does and solves 80% of the use cases for self driving cars : highway driving. On local roads, this shit should be disabled for obviously reasons and the driver at 100% attention and in control.

I hope more silicon Jew worshippers meet their deaths in those cars. They want to turn humans dumb and stupid animals reliant on the silicon Jew to perform even the simplest and mundane tasks.

Attached: unabomberprimary.jpg (994x619, 71K)

All of the private tesla autopilot demonstration videos I have seen on YouTube had one thing in common:
>brainlet drivers not putting their hands on the steering wheel
They all wait for the first warnings and then quickly touch it only to release their hands again.
This is NOT hot the driver is supposed to operate the system.
Brainlet drivers are at fault here.

beta tester

Imagine putting your safety in the hands of a computer and being mad that it went wrong.

I always find this funny.. We make rules for the road. You don't enforce them and shit happens. Then you create technology and new rules and expect things to change. How about enforcing the existing rules so roadways are safe. Ticket drivers who drive like retards. Take their licenses away. Ticket people who don't use turn signals. Ticket people who blow stop signs/red lights. Instead, cops are busy being revenue enforces on shit that doesn't impact people's safety like someone going 10 over the speed limit. The real danger is why some dickface does something unexpected and doesn't signal. You hardly ever see tickets for this even though its the result of most crashes. Now imagine some stupid ass self driving car slamming on brakes because it think it 'saw' something .. It's going to be chaos on the roadway.

Exactly.. the same brainlet dickhead who causes most accidents on the road will be behind the wheel of one of these things causing even more insane accidents by being a complete nigger who is unattentive and not used to driving thus being clueless when the car actually needs them to drive it to safety.

nice backpedaling, bugman.

I mean you can keep calling me names, or we can try to actually discuss the issue at hand. If ya ain't got anything else to offer, go find a Jow Forums thread to fuck around in

I unironically believe failure to use turn signals when changing lanes or turning should result in corporal punishment or death.

>get in a vehicle as a driver
>refuse to take responsibility
I'm talking about both the dead idiot and the idiot company. When you start making decisions, either personally or remotely through AI, you have to take responsibility.

>expect people to be paying attention to the road
this is so fucking retarded, the entire point of autopilot is that you are not fucking driving and are able to do something else. To ask people to pay attention to the fucking road when they aren't actually driving is absurd as well

Nope, the way liability is structured means it needs to be damn near infinitely better than human drivers and it just isn't going to be. Not without closed controlled roads.

>the way liability is structured
The way liability is structured now. You don't know how it will be structured in the future. And you don't know how long it will be before self-driving cars are statistically less accident prone than people.

because it is not PERFECTED, and they are WORKING on it... god you idiots are amazing... you expect the technology to be finished or are you just mentaly retarded

They are using the current law to their advantage.
Doesn't matter what gimmicks the car has, the onus is still completely on the driver to be paying attention to the road and in control of the car at all times.

Jesus people are actually this stupid

It’s is auto pilot but it tells you everytine it’s it is not even Alpha stage and they you should be fully aware 100% of the time as if you were driving yourself in autopilot mode.
