It seems many in here have this misconstructed view of pre-war Syria under Asshat as a bastion of stability, it wasn't. Syrian society was poor and unstable, and as such there were several uprisings against the Asshat dynasty. Asshats poor management of Syria shows when you compare it to its neighbors, Syria had a meager GDI per capita of about $2,500, while Lebanon (unstable but democratic) was at about $8,700, Turkey was similar at about $8,700 as well, and Israel (stable and democratic) was at $26,000. Even war torn Iraq, had a better GDI per capita of about $4,400. I think this paints a clear picture of the miserable state of Syria under Asshat's mismanagement. No wonder the people wanted something different.
