Seriously, just look at the US intercontinental launch capacity compared to Russia. That Russia is even considered a "rival" to the US is just laughable. Russia does not have the economy, nor manpower, nor technological edge to even compare to the US. Russia is a nuisance, nothing more.
Modern day Russia is weaker than China, there's no doubt about it. And make no mistake, the sanctions made against Russia and Russian oligarchs are hurting Putin, big time. I wouldn't be surprised if there are already plans being drafted on who is going to succeed him.

Crimea was lost before the US could react. To retake Crimea, the US would have to fight the Russian. What the US did instead was to impose heavy sanctions on Russia with the support of the UN. It also helped the US gain the support of the rest of the world, whereas Russia was portrayed as a warmonger.
So what Russia gained was the port of Sevastopol and greater influence of the black sea region, but what they lost was soft political power in the UN, not to mention the long term economic effects of sanction. Geopolitics is a zero sum game, so where one loses, another gains. Russia payed a high diplomatic price for Crimea, and furthered their own isolation. This is bad for the Russian people in the long term, but it could help Putin stay in power.
