Why are they like this in Portugal and Spain? Spain have some companies that are famous worldwide, but Portugal is basically unheard of. Neither of them have a great history of free-market economies and a fierce protection of private property. They don't produce many scientists and scientifical progress either. Unironically this but it stems a bit deeper than that as well. There's a book called "The labyrinth of solitude" written by a mexican philosopher in the 50's. In it he tries to put the pieces together of why mexicans seem so lost in the world and he used mexican immigrants in the US back then as an micro-example of what happened.

Essentially, Mexico(and basically the rest of Latin America) were left without a metaphorical father when Europeans conquered them as they killed their leaders.
