Well, the main reason we had so much problems with the Vietnamese is because of the Geneva Convention. We followed it, which made us weaker. They didn't, which made them stronger. They would hide among civilian populations, for example, and ambush us. Then they'd run back into the population and blend in with the locals.

That's not to take away from their determination or fighting spirit, but I gurantee you if we adopted some of their tactics, or started rounding up civilian populations and put them into camps, they wouldn't have lasted very long.

Basically this, if we went there as "Imperialist Colonizers" and basically shot anyone who so much as glanced funny at us the war would have been over and done with in a very short period of time. It's easier to rule through fear than promises of freedom.

Viets are basically China's bastard child. They were a bunch of barbarians until they got conquered and civilized by the Chinese. They lived under Chinese domination for 1000 years. Afterward they got their independence when China was fragmented and busy with other more important shit. Most of Vietnam's aristocrats and kings were Han Chinese immigrants while the commoners were natives. Viets are proud of defeating the Mongols but they'll slice your throat if you tell them the king of Vietnam at the time was Han Chinese, which is a fact. Later the Ming China conquered Vietnam but after a couple decades had to deal with horse niggers so had to withdraw from Vietnam and leave behind a crapload of advanced Chinese cannons. The Viets used those Chinese cannons to conquer the south called Champa and bully their SEA neighbors. Vietnam was 99% culturally Chinese. You literally cannot find any unique culture from Vietnam. It all came from China. They use an alphabet now though, but it was made by Europeans and forced on them by the French. Vietnam was always a vassal of China. Heard of the Sino-French War? It was over who would get to control Vietnam. The war was technically a stalemate but China relinquished control of Vietnam to France because there was too much other things going on in China. So Vietnam became France's bitch for 100 years. The French called them Annamites and treated them like complete shit. Funny though, Viet girls dream of having even 1% of French blood. France was busy with WWII so the Viets finally gained their freedom. That's the gist of Vietnamese history up to the 20th century. They're not good fighters but Vietnam is nothing but jungle and mountains which make it hard to occupy for invaders. They are also extremely resilient, like cockroaches.
