Judging from the news article, it seems this predator left suggestive comments on the 13 year old's Instagram account and that was the end of it. Obviously the parents were rattled, so they went to police. Police were already investigating this dude, but since he had only left comments, they weren't about to do anything further, as they were likely in the process of setting up a sting / gathering other evidence, so they just suggested blocking him.
Parents block him, but after six weeks of not hearing anything regarding his arrest or anything from police, decide to go vigilante mode, and unblock him so they can invite him over for a beating.
The issue here seems that the police didn't properly convey that they were actively monitoring this guy and that the family didn't have to worry. Six weeks is a long time though, so depending on what this guy did, it is understandable that the family snapped, and one does wonder what the fuck police were doing / planning.
The parents didn't assault him to protect their own daughter, since they had already noticed and blocked contact, they say they did it to protect other daughters, which the police were already doing.
Canada is a rule of laws, and it seems like they were upheld here, with some perhaps unfortunate policing. I'm sure the parents will get off very easy in court.
