I'm all for giving the police good training, proper equipment and sensible rules of conduct, but I don't like the militarization I see in the US. In my mind the police should be the quintessential "boys in blue" with their badges, hats, nightsticks, pistols and shotguns. If I see police who look like soldiers, I get worried, because our soldiers are for fighting wars and protecting our country, not policing our streets.
Instead of spending money and effort letting police offers LARP as army men, instead focus those resources on ensuring the standards of training and physical fitness are kept as high as possible, with martial arts, running, driving, team tactics and shooting training done extensively. Ensure the officers are armed with a reasonable assortment of non-lethal and lethal weapons, and ensure that they are also trained in basic negotiation and threat management - the kind of social skills that can help to avoid violent encounters. Also chest cameras for officers should be a priority, as it both helps to police their own conduct (no pun intended) and helps them out in legal cases where they're accused of "brutally murdering a vibrant African youth" or something similar.
