new yorker born in the 70's here. I can honestly say that NYC was a shithole my entire life....until the giuliani administration. the years leading up to 9/11 were a great time to be in new york. that was new york's golden age.

white flight, so the middle class left quickly and the tax base suffered, so there were cuts. cops were cut and whatnot, schools shut. also violence, niggers were rowdy back then, so they burned down neighborhoods and vandalized everything. was hard to police. hmm, what else? just general urban decay.
I think the 90s were NYCs golden years like the other NYCanon said. Before 9/11, in Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, parts of Brooklyn. Things were going real good.

yes, it was really bad. My mother grew up in Washington Heights in the 70s and 80s. guns were a common sight, it seems. My grandmother also grew up in Harlem. These places once had a lot of Italian immigrants, but then blacks started moving in as they built projects and whatnot, and the whites moved to Queens and Staten Island.
The Bronx was entirely jewish and white, too. Then the blacks moved in, burnt it down, and all the bronx jews moved to Boca Raton, Florida. Really.
