The Soviet Union in 1940 was coming out of a political and military purge, their armor divisions were mainly made of old bt-5 and were about only a thousand KV type tanks and T34's around, infrantry in the border were severely lacking equipment and military reserves were low (about 5 million men in 1940 and only 4 million in service, in comparisson germany had almost the double of that in the spring of 1940).

I think there wouldve been huge morale shifts had Moscow fallen. Besides that, going straight for the oil wouldve given the massive soviet army time to regroup and wouldve left the Axis military relatively vulnerable to being cut off in the Caucasus region.
