I was in the UK Army when FMJ hit theatres.
We thought it was funny as fuck. So OTT, so uber-macho. Not one of us could have kept a straight face through any of the bullshit he spews in the scenes with the recruits.
I'm sure he was meant to be a caricature, and it worked - nobody could take such a posturing arsehole seriously, no matter what uniform he was wearing.
He stole the film - nobody remembers any plot after Pyle shoots him (long fucking overdue...).
I'm sure they go to Vietnam or something.
