I actually saw him at a shit-ton of other events, graduations, welcome home shit, etc. before I got out. But at those, he was giving a speech, telling some jokes, shaking us down for more Toys for Tots money and donated toys, etc. Only the officers and the Chiefs/Gunneys were getting any face time. Usually, I was too busy getting 'fitshaced' with my wife and/or my shipmates to wade through the fanboys.

I memeflag because I am not home in the states. But no, I would not shit up the Gunney's memorial thread with lies. If I did, that shit would have to be much more outlandish, awesome and more substantial, just like the Gunney was.

For me though, it was impressive. Just in his time as a DI, imagine all the faces he saw. Sure, I was wearing jumper whites in a USMC NCO club, and that would have (me being the only on there at the time) made me stand out. But he remembered something about our conversation and cracked open an old joke while also citing my unit's motto. I wasn't in uniform at the VFW fundraiser. He knew my face.

That doesn't mean he was my best pal and invited me over to plow Mrs. Gunney. But it is a testament to a quality he had which many people might otherwise overlook or not know about.
