As it turns out a society of Nice Guys is fine as long as it is filled only with Nice Guys or Smart Guys. If Mean Guys are introduced they will kill all the Nice Guys. If Sly Guys are introduced they will rob all the Nice Guys and replace them. However Sly Guys can't deceived one another, so social cohesion breaks down. Extinction.
A society of Mean Guys will destroy itself too through constant fighting.
A society of Smart Guys is fine and they can deal with Mean or Sly guys... but only if there aren't too many of them. If Nice Guys are present and enough of them are preyed upon by Sly or Mean Guys then the same thing as above happens with the Mean/Sly Guys causing a breakdown of trust and social cohesion. Extinction follows.
This is how I view Socialism/Communism and the Welfare State. It's also how I view scammers. In a society of good natured and trusting people, compassionate people, a strategy that robbs the naive and avoids the wise is a winning strategy. The proof of this is that despite the Communists' success in defeating their enemies they ultimate collapsed from within because their strategy for civilization was one of corruption, fear, and inefficiency. Unbeatable because it appealed to the dumb masses, but also unsustainable. We see this repeating the now. The Left keeps making gains but the fate of their way of life is written in bold, red ink, and it is not a happy one.

Eisenhower opted to let the russians have at Berlin because he correctly assumed that participating in the battle would result in massive casualties for what was ultimately a foregone conclusion.
