The victim Valery Pshenichny was prosecuted in a criminal case about the theft of money during the construction of the Varshavyanka submarine for the Defense Ministry. He was the owner of the company Novit Pro, which developed a three-dimensional computer model of the submarine. In 2016, the businessman suspected his partner and director Andrei Petrov of multi-million theft of money from the firm's accounts and got a criminal case. While in custody, Petrov testified against Pshenichny and an employee of the Admiralty Shipyards Gleb Emelchenkov, accusing them of deliberately overstating the cost of the order. The new defendants were detained and arrested, and three weeks later one of them was killed.
Friends and colleagues called engineer Pshenichny "Russian Ilon Mask." The submarine over which he worked and, in the opinion of the investigation, which he overstated the price, was absolutely unique. According to experts, the appearance of such submarines could give new opportunities in shipbuilding, and in the work of oil and gas companies.
