Serious Q: in Dixie, how common are Civil War re-enactments? If so, who attends these events? Are they taken seriously by those who attend or is it just an amusing past time?

Kentucky would have eventually had to join the war; if the Confederates had waited old Abe would have moved into the State since the idea of opening a new front really helped the North. This would've moved the State into southern hands.

Instead, Leonidas Polk in his infinite wisdom decided to invade the State - which forced them into Federal hands.

Additionally, even though the State had to rely on the North to repel its Confederate invasion, the State was never truly a Federal supporter. Lincoln had to install two military governors of the State through the war. The first, "Butcher Burbridge" suppressed Kentuckians through arrest of judges and the like. Burbridge would even have the Lieutenant Governor of the State arrested for voting for McClellan in the presidential election.

The re-enactors themselves generally take it pretty seriously, it's an expensive hobby after all, but the audience is mostly just there for a show. Here in KY it isn't as big as it seems to be further south, but there are re-enactments of at least the major battles. The people who attend are the same type of people who attend things like airshows, mostly families with kids but there are some edgelords there too.

Thanks! I wasn't sure about the educational value of these events; but the airshow comparison is helpful.

Here in Tennessee they're pretty common. The actual reenactors tend to be history buffs who also like to have some drinks afterward. The crowds are a mix of white southerners and curious but respectful yankees.

To expand, it's hard to say reenactment is "big" in any part of the country. It seems like it's only a thing in the South because that's where most of the battlefields are, but these events generally draw reenactors from the whole country.

While I'm not a reenactor myself, I think most see it as both a fun hobby and a "solemn duty" to their ancestors to keep their memory alive.

Generally, the public just goes for the spectacle, but many battlefield reenactments focus on public education. For instance, the Perryville, KY battle reenactment puts a lot of effort in running a "drill camp" for the area's public school kids.

The rise in "dixiebooism" is a direct result of the recent increase by a portion of the public in voicing disdain for everything Confederate and Southron. It's a violation of the 'Great Compromise' described by Shelby Foote.

Its more of the antifags and what not flooding into those protest and starting street fights/an all around bad mishandling of the removal of statues and what not. I dont give a shit about someone who wants to have a rebel flag decal or something like that, but I agreed with the removal of the flag from the court house on the basis that no flag, other than the US and state flag, should be flown on government property. I also agree that each town or city should vote freely on if they want to keep or remove any monument.

The problem with the monument removal is the people of the city aren't even getting to vote on the matter. Cities like Memphis are just doing shady ass bullshit to remove the monuments because some carpetbagging mayor and his cronies says it needs to go.
