Idk i feel that kubrick probably realized that even though he knew he could make a masterpiece even he couldn't beat that dead horse of the vietnam setting without making it seem tried.
The beginnng half of the movie defiintely made it, and the second half is probably why people don't reference it when people talk about his cannon, even though it's unquestionably the best nam movie
