The missile strike was about punishing Syria for using chemical weapons. The idea is to demonstrate to everyone else in the world with a working pesticide factory that they should'nt make or use chemical weapons (not even a little bit) since the USA will bomb them.

The Syrian War killed the pipeline plans that the Saudis wanted. Right now their natural gas is unmarketable because Russia and the USA sell it cheaper to Europe.
Ironically it's Russia and to a lesser extent, USA now, that benefits from the chaos in Syria and Iraq since it halted the pipeline. Temporarily, at least, unless Russia thinks they can get Syria to deny the pipeline be built.
I doubt the war is about petroleum and more about the people of Syria who desperately want to kill each other. It's hard to tell what stakes Russia and Europe and the USA even have in the conflict.
