Can somebody break down for me why Reddit is such an incredibly shitty website? As in the actual mechanism of the place that makes it such a smoldering bastion of shit that when you try to mildly got against the grain of an established "sub/reddit" they sperg out like screeching autists. The censorship and 1984 thought crime thing they have going on is definitely part of it, but didn't actually start out like that. Something "drove" it into the pathetic shit show that it's become. Something inherent in its design.

The upvote downvote system. It encourages certain kinds of behavior, people adapt their content to 'win' upvotes and eventually that general style crystallizes in a to culture, this combined with it being a site full of name fags means that people take into account their future standing when they make any given post. You can be on a board talking about hiking or any other benign hobby and people will go into your comment history find something you posted on another sub-reddit and use that to make you a pariah.
TLDR: no anonymity + a reward & punish system.
