You can't rule of over a plantation with an iron fist. The Spaniards tried, and failed over and over. On a Dutch plantation you had a kind of ranking. Carpenters, and other skilled labor had status. Slavery was never profitable. Normally 1/3th of the labor force was out of action, or just old. You can see the ships culture and plantation culture back in a nation called Suriname. Where village leaders are called captains, who shouldn't be addressed directly.
So if you got sold by your fellow Ashanti people to a white .. you were better off than getting sold to an Arab or other African.

Indentured servants went through absolutely horrid conditions. What's worse, because they weren't owned, there was no vested interest in their well-being and they arguably died at far higher rates than their enslaved counterparts, especially for the latter after 1808.
Slavery between 1808 and 1831 was pretty "decent" by slavery standards. A lot of freedom - at the owner's discretion - as compared to the South in the wake of the Turner rebellion, which saw a lot of draconian laws regulating education and other liberties introduced in response.
