Aliens most likely exist but I highly doubt they've come to earth in UFOs and probed people's asses. "Spirits" probably came about from people trying to make sense of what is happening around them. Think about how freaky it must be to live in complete ignorance of the world. For them, every earthquake, plague, and catastrophe must be a literal nightmare.
