Why would this man, a lifelong successful billionaire, who has never been seriously involved in the political arena suddenly run for President on a highly anti-establishment and pro-nationalist platform and then come around to be more of the same? Did he really think that once he was in office he was going to do what he campaigned on and then he got a deep state reality check? Was it a fraud from the beginning? In any case, the man put his empire, his reputation, his personal life, his company...everything... all of it on the line to do this. He's old and successful and has a family. Either he went in believing in what he preached and got shut down or he was compromised from the very beginning. None of it makes any sense. What the fuck happened?

I'd say he's too trusting of his advisers. Look at the company he keeps in his cabinet. He's hired mostly bankers, neocons, and long-time establishment figures. His own son-in-law is as dirty as they come, and I wouldn't be surprised if Trump's pro-Saudi, pro-Israel positions are because of him. Trump railed on the Saudis throughout his campaign, then he decided to go dancing with the Saudi royals after taking office. For him to make a complete 180, someone must have convinced him that continuing to do business with them is the right thing to do. One of his most consistent positions, YEARS before even running for president, was to get the fuck out of the Middle East and focus on investing in America. You're still in Afghanistan and Iraq, Trump was pulled back into Syria right after saying he would pull out, he's supporting the Saudi war crimes in Yemen, he basically flattened Raqqa, sent troops to Niger, etc. I highly doubt he spontaneously reneged on his foreign policy. It's extremely likely that all the pro-war establishment shills in his cabinet are the ones who convinced him it's the right thing to do. I would eat my hat if Trump spontaneously decided right after taking office that he wouldn't be pulling out America's military from these conflicts.
For campaign promises which he actually has approached or tried to fulfill, he has a lot of resistance from both Democrats and Republicans (e.g. tariffs and NAFTA threats).
Despite all that, he was very close in the polls, and they poll numbers were actually fairly accurate. He was constantly saying that if he lost, the system was rigged. He was expecting to lose, so he could attack Hillary and the establishment as a private citizen. He probably would have started or invested in a media company to rival CNN, MSNBC, Fox, etc.
He's been considering a run for a longest. He would've chosen whatever party he thought he had the easiest chance of winning.
