the pharmaceutical and medical industries incinerate vast amounts of plastic on a regular basis, even stuff that's not really contaminated, on the off chance that it may be. considering canned beverages don't have a cover over the top, and your mouth contacts that part of the tinny to slurps it, and other customers may be touching that with their shitty hands, and quite a lot of stores have terrible hygiene control (e.g. rats scurrying around the stock), it is healthier to drink it with a straw.

we have a vending machine water company in the uk called "one water", which you'll find around universities. it claims to be helping africa by donating money from the sales of bottled water to installing water pumps.

the price of the water strangely tracks the price of the sodas; £1.30 a bottle.

And reusable straws are a DISASTER because you’d have to clean them with chemicals that have to be made and in extra water and maybe use extra power to blow them dry so it doesn’t harbor bacteria. So a hospital or nursing home straw needs to be disposed of unles it’s a water jug. Period. What a fucking disaster, cleaning sick peoples spittle off straw.
