At 20 I'd be trying to leverage as valuable of an education as possible. GPA, internships, side projects, clubs, etc. When you're out of college you need to be making 60-70k. I'd aim for 100k by 25, jumping jobs every 2 years. After that it depends on you.
Personally I want to get to 400k but I'd be satisfied with that, don't need more. And of course I'd be ultra frugal to save for FIRE and retire before 40.

I was making $25k when I was 20 back in 98. Adjusted for inflation $38k in 2018 dollars.

A number of factors contributed to my "luck". First, I seem to have been born with a high IQ. It's probably 135ish.

Second, I was born to piece of shit low IQ parents that abused me. My father instilled an irrational fear of life into me throughout my entire life. He reiterated over and over through verbal abuse that the world fucking sucks and everyone is out to trick you, hurt you, and keep you down. I had to hide my things because he would steel them. I'm talking toys and garbage pale kids cards. Shit that doesn't even make sense for a grown man to steal.

I grew up without food, clothing, or love.

In addition to making me morbidly obese in adulthood, it also made a hard worker because I believed I was always 2 seconds away from getting fired at any time.

The third bit of luck was that I was born at the beginning of the computer revolution. When I turned 18 they were taking anybody who could work a mouse and calling them a "programmer". I got a job as a "computer operator" right out of highschool. My high IQ allowed me to increase my knowledge without college.

I eventually got a degree from a bullshit bootcamp university, but 99% of my knowledge is self taught. It still is. I spend at least 6 hours a month learning new shit on in my free time.
