I was really into Jordan Peterson for 2 to 3 months. I watched hours of his videos, and I got his book.
It's all nonsense. He literally has a formula, where he basically brings up an important message you already know (i.e. "you need to get your shit together"), then he brings in mythology or theology to make it seem really profound, and then he sprinkles in lots of weird little political claims that he just glosses over and doesn't provide any support for, since those aren't really his key point. It's ridiculous. It's the same method as motivational speakers like Deepak Chopra, televangelists like Joel Osteen, and cult leaders like Osho and Sadhguru.
Want mythology? Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell.
Want religious philosophy? Shobogenzo by Dogen Zhuangzi
Want self help? How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie Essentialism by Greg McKeown So Good They Can't Ignore You by Cal Newport Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman The War of Art by Steven Pressfield
Want hardcore right wing self help? The Ego and Its Own by Max Stirner
Want self help from a goofy dude-bro? Models by Mark Manson
>buys books written by jump up internet star There is your problem there
Lincoln Johnson
Yeah, but he sells cool rugs.
James Martin
>then he brings in mythology or theology to make it seem really profound I believe that is his foundational work, from Maps of Meaning published in 1999. His advice comes from this foundation, please remember that the idea for the book came from his success on Quora, and since then the book has become a bestseller. Religions that offer life rules justify their rules with God or the incredible enlightenment of the Buddha or whatever, but who knows what their basis really was when they developed these rules.
Nice to see you here >who knows what their basis really was when they developed these rules. That's a really interesting point
Brody Nelson
Most people have a formula the wheel of success hasn’t existed for millions of years why are you asking for one man to reinvent it
Caleb Cooper
WIPE YOUR ASS!!!
CLEAN YOUR FCUKING ROOM!!!!!!!!!
James Young
made me lol
Parker Allen
Yeah but he owns the libs le epic style
David Harris
Why the pressfield version of the art of war? I agree with everything else.
I do like Peterson for breaking down Jung into manageable bits, Jung likes to lay out a big picture in a bunch of $10 words really quickly and then run with it from there. Maybe I'm just dumb, but Peterson is good at breaking Jung down into real meaning.
Noah Gutierrez
... le grandpa style
Ryder Gray
>Why the pressfield version of the art of war? It's not a version of the Art of War, it's a completely different book. He just chose the name as a play on the Art of War.
Brody James
That's what I don't get about him, what has he said or done that is so groundbreaking >get your life together no fucking shit
Peterson has a few good arguments but most of his shit falls flat and he contradicts himself too much. His ilk seem to be playing an analogous role to the Kerensky government in the Russian revolution, ineffectual moderates who'll have their time in the sunlight for a while before fading into insignificance when red and white really start killing eachother.
Carson Wright
Exactly right, he's scamming young white men who are so lost and confused that they'll throw their parent's money at someone to say the obvious.
Henry Smith
>Other people have done what Peterson doesn't claim to be the leading authority on, but better and that means Peterson is wrong >Being surprised that a clinical psychologist is giving self help advice >Peterson is nonsense, but Stirner is deep
He was fine right up until he started shilling for cash and then refused to answer the JQ. I do still like his University lectures though, nice to have free content like that
Daniel Adams
Post is so true that it needs no digits to confern.
Refreshing to see someone give a critique and then offer alternatives to the thing critiqued. Thanks for the recommendations.
Wyatt Clark
Jordan Peterson is a meme philosopher. He is literally Slavoj Zizek in the opposite direction.
Traditionalism/hierarchy instead of Communism/Marxism. Jung instead of Freud. Heidegger instead of Hegel. Traditional fairy tales instead of pop culture movies.
>The Ego and Its Own by Max Stirner Is it really any good? Does not not apparently promote egotism , nihilism and so on
William King
Stirner is a good writer, but his philosophy is weak.
Wyatt Brooks
if the books you listed are so great, why were you still taken in by peterson after reading them?
Tyler Thompson
There's nothing that he says that you couldn't get from the bible or some classic philosophy. He rebrands something that has been free forever and peddles it to a newly atheist generation in search of a moral code.
Luis Gutierrez
idk man. Ever since I started taking Jordan Petersons advice my room has been exceptionally clean.
Ethan Gutierrez
There's nothing that he says that you couldn't get from a chat with a 60 year old grampa. He rebrands something that has been free forever and peddles it to a newly atheist generation in search of a moral code.
>psychologist delivers practical advice >"It's all nonsense."
Kill yourself, shill. Your hourly anti-JBP threads are shitting up the board. Nobody's falling for it.
(((They))) are deeply unnerved that a philosophical doctor is bringing hope, encouragement, and personal responsibility to tens of thousands of young White mens' lives, while simultaneously exposing the neo-Marxist brainwashing system which (((they))) spent decades installing in universities.
JP has never said he was the fucking messiah guys. He literally wrote two books and then got famous because he didn't follow the gender pronoun meme.
I don't understand the JP hate desu. He does some cool analysis on Disney movies, he hates Marxists and talks about Western Civilization. I'm not following the "OMG he's not completely original" because I've never read a philosopher who was original since Socrates.
Das rite, user. He does. It takes a lot to understand Jung. He makes it much easier. His advice and teachings are mid-tier personal development, Most shit is about being happy and positive. His is about suffering. It comes with shadow work. Which if you are not doing, you're a complete pussy.
He's fucked on the JQ though. His audience is from the internet. Eventually, most who get into developing inner-truths will entertain the JQ and gain an understanding of it. They'll see he cucks it and move away from Peterson's work when. That and his Bible series have a lot to offer.
Whoever started to point out that he sounds like fucking kermit ruined him for me
Henry Murphy
I read How to Make Friends and Influence People and while it is a good read, interesting, funny and light hearten; I never felt that it helped me in any way... In fact it's pretty forgettable after like two weeks.
I'm currently reading Dangerous Personalities by Joe Navarro
Noah Rodriguez
You are mentally weak
Zachary Myers
yeah, many have said that. he uses post-modernism just as many as any marxist. word salad his favourite dish, with a sprinkle of David Campbell.
Levi Watson
stop trying to find a modern messiah. understand what the right path is and piece it together for yourself. ever person is different, find what leads you to be the best you.
Mason Hernandez
well duh. psychology is a scam and jung was kicked out of the club by freud for being a super scammer. and peterson claims jung as his primary source and inspiration.
Adrian Gutierrez
people tend to hate those who are more successful then them
Jose Hall
>Deepak Chopra Real talk, why is this guy always on PBS? I just want to watch British qts bake a cake.
Nicholas Hernandez
Be kind, patient, caring and accepting, but dont forget to be an indominable force for good. know restraint and when to use it.
Juan Walker
He's honest about what it takes. When he talks about "burning off dead wood". That's a powerful metaphor. If you're a normalfag stuck in duality that won't make sense though because normalfags will never challenge the lies they tell themselves.
Jordan Green
His entire paradigm is based out of Jungian psychology, of course PostModernism is mixed in there
Luke Lee
Scamming young White men into believing they have the power to improve their own lives
>The Ego and Its Own ty for book recommendations user
Joseph Ortiz
>It's all nonsense. It's not nonsense. It's nothing groundbreaking, and some of it's a stretch, but there are a lot of good arguments against actual nonsense thats been dumped on us for the last few years.
>How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie If you need to be "taught" the concepts in this book, you are never going to understand people.
Evan Brown
>These
Peterson offers a middle school intro to Western socio-psychology and self help; dont expect depth from pop-psychology
Adrian Thomas
peterson always says that these are not his ideas nor are they new. there's just an innate longing to have them articulated in the politcal sphere. that's it
Aaron Martin
its the other way around though, he attempts to explain how religion is a set of allegories trying to tell you how to get your shit together and hows its meaning is lost on most people today atheists and religious people alike
and unlike most self-help gurus he actually has some serious experience as a psychologist
Logan Bell
>be white male in a society that has degenerated totally to the point where basic self actualization has not been passed on by the previous generation >blip on the radar >well elucidated psychology that explains that you can make a difference in the world >for the first time ever be told "you can take the reigns & you can start small, right now" >be fucking into it & start growing & changing & building now >be miserable stodgy whelp >don't understand people, bitter about society >have no plans, goals, abilities >see someone else going on & on about the inherent power of a focused human mind >think "well i read that in the Cliffnotes on Jung >bitterness surges >this philosopher is STUPID this is all STUPID i've HEARD THAT BEFORE % your newfound self actualization is STUPID that's where your hate is from
Grayson Myers
That's his whole appeal. He is the grouchy grandpa / uncle for a generation of men without fathers
Eli Powell
>If you need to be "taught" the concepts in this book, you are never going to understand people.
Bullshit, user. I wasn't properly socialized and was abused during my formative years, so these books help me. I have close friends, can get laid, pay, taxes, own a home, and work in sales.
Leo Garcia
Some of them might have basis on sayings of Buddah or Jesus, etc.
Like, I'm not really into Peterson but it's really fedora to attack him for "He mentioned Jesus or Buddah as an example why you should be hygenic, DROPPED!'
Michael Reyes
Clean your room.
Andrew Gray
>he fell for the rug sale he spoke common sense at a key moment, nobody claimed he was shakespeare
Jordan Davis
Yeah pretty much
I watch him because I find him fascinating. He does say something interesting every once in a while that I had never thought about, but it's mostly gibberish.
Isn't that the entire point? He's a self help guy and that's it i thought. Is that so bad?
James Howard
so no different than seeing a psych
Isaiah Brooks
I thought stirner was a lefty
should I check him out?
Aaron Morgan
More like a catholic priest extorting people in the medieval ages, but I suppose modern psychs fill a similar role as well.
Dominic Russell
this is a shill thread.
Jace Watson
accurate image
even has the "deepak chopra" line in it which these sam harris worshipping faggots always use
leftist shills need to fuck off with peterson. ignore him if you dont like him, its actually pretty easy.
fuckin retards.
Jack Garcia
He’s a mix between leftist and rightist ideologues. He can be anything you want him to be.
Logan Richardson
>rightist leftypol spotted
good shill thread though
Aaron Phillips
He was a Young Hegelian who associated with Marx, Engels and Feuerbach and called for the overthrow of the bourgeoisie and capitalism. What the fuck do you think?
Parker Howard
He's like Lauren Southern in that he's a really, really entry-level redpill. Frankly I think that's fine. You can't just dump concentrated Jow Forums on people from day 1; growing out of the years of indoctrination (from TV, public school, and so on) takes some time.
Charles Hughes
There is nothing new or original about Peterson's work.
BUT, there is also nothing wrong with reorganizing old information to appeal to a new audience, which he did quite successfully.
Easton Murphy
>Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell The book is a real mess: >figures not referenced anywhere in the text >takes bits and pieces from various myths instead of using several complete myths as exemplars of the hero's journey >mere application of the superior Jung It's worth knowing about the hero's journey itself but the book is just awful. You'd get more out of reading Jung's Man and His Symbols (skip the meme 'archetypes in art' chapter) and just googling 'the hero's journey' and reading a summary of the model.
Jason Taylor
no they separated mostly because jung saw psychological validity in christianity and ((freud)) thought that christianity was a bunch if bullshit that needed to be discarded. freud also thought that people literally wanted to fuck their moms and dads and was all around a pervert and barely had any conception for metaphor, unlike jung
Levi Nguyen
Yeah, he became famous by "triggering le libtards" and now makes a tonne of money by his adoring virgin fans.
Easton Howard
i can summarize his works in one sentence "your argument used axioms, which don't exist in any permanent way, which makes it invalid, but this argument is real because i invented calling axioms stupid" dude tried to open a store & had to close it because the townspeople correctly recognized him & his friends as out-of-towner hipsters & they got no business product was fine they were so insufferable they couldn't sell milk that's Stirner
>JP has never said he was the fucking messiah guys. He literally wrote two books and then got famous because he didn't follow the gender pronoun meme.
Mostly. He's also a lightning rod for controversy for rejecting the 'white males a scum' bandwagon.
I really like Peterson, though my opinion of him did diminish slightly when I learned he was anti-depressants still. Seemed quite rich from someone teaching self-motivation.
Anthony Reyes
lauren southern is a random cunt whoring for attention who makes videos, no background in anything, no life experience, nothing
stop watching and jerking off to garbage and maybe it wont cloud your mind and you wont say such ridiculous things
astoundingly elucidated. you have no argument, you're just pissy.
Alexander Rivera
Ah, yes, a meme is an argument.
Gavin Cooper
I was able to read his book and improve a few parts of my life. Why yall gotta be so gay about something so simple? You're a bunch of faggots, but I don't waste my energy posting threads about how gay you actually are constantly. The only time I've ever thought about him as an individual is when niggers make these threads.
Nolan Stewart
when a meme can summarise the YOUR "argument" before you even make it, yes it is. fuck off mexico, shill.
Michael Clark
Peterson is a fucking faggot but this god is even more of a fucking faggot. God damn do I hate you kekistani reddit faggot fucks.
Jaxson Fisher
tfw you've unironically already read all those books. Also add meditations by Marcus Aurelius to that last, that shits fucking GOLD.
Peterson is the drooling peanut brain Wojack of internet psychology, and he hasn't even begun to understand what he's really fighting. Can't even name it.
