It's a total money grab and it's facilitated by the complexities of private medical companies, insurance companies, and politicians who allow these practices to be legal.

Even if this kid's life wasn't worth it the procedures gave doctors a great deal of experience and knowledge that will benefit future patients. And assuming experimental surgeries were performed in this case then many lives may be saved by as a result of all the money "wasted" here.
This is really no different from NASA or SpaceX "wasting" billions of dollars by launching rockets and crashing them into the ocean. While on the surface it seems like people wasting money on something that did nothing we actually gain a great deal from it.

If you believe "we shouldn't do it because it's not profitable" you may literally be a kike. The only problem I see with this is that the government probably paid for this but that is something that you can blame on the government itself not on this guy and the doctors.
