Arizona’s 8th Congressional District: Former House Rep Trent Franks (Republican) resigned on January 31, 2018 due to a sexual harassment scandal. He won in 2016 with 68.6% of the vote (the Green Party received 31.4%, no Democrat candidate). He won in 2014 with 75.8% of the vote (the “Americans Elect” party got 24.2%, no Democrat candidate). The district is 73.9% White, 18.2% Hispanic. Trump got 58% of the vote, Hillary got 37%.
The likely winner is Debbie Lesko. Many of the leftists I’ve seen on the Internet who were predicting a Conor Lamb victory think this is going to be a loss for them. None of the factors that lead to Conor Lamb’s victory – blue dog style platform to appeal to the Democratic voters who support Trump, good looking white guy with grassroots appeal – apply here. From what I can tell, Lesko is portraying Tipirneni as too far left and stressing her stance on immigration (important for this district), and Tipirneni is portraying Lesko as a career politician while stressing her stances on healthcare and education. Unlike Rick Saccone, Lesko seems to be making a solid effort to campaign rather than relying on being Republican in a Republican leaning district.
The media is being rather quiet about this. It seems they don’t want an eventual loss to be too public.
