I actually coined a term for this way Americans think about gun and knife safety: American Excessive Defense Syndrome. (Feel free to use the term). My view is that Americans have AEDS because they are just afraid deep down about conspiracies and that the government is out to get them.

You may say 17 or 16 it's okay for them to buy knives but is there any harm in saying they should have their parents buy knives for household use?
