Nicaragua is run by corrupt and incompetent socialists, after a series of corruption scandals and subsequent protests most people had enough of the government, and the latest corruption scandal pushed many people over the edge. What happened is that politicians stole money from the country's social security for their own private reasons and when the money ran out they increased taxes and cut pensions as a desperate measure to keep the social security system afloat.
When protests broke out the government sent police to subdue the protests, the socialists also have a "youth party" that they sent out to clash with protestors as well, and then the army/gendarme was sent in as well. Up to now somewhere between 20-30 protestors have been killed by the police.

I was in nicaragua for a few months in 2016. It's a beautiful country, nicanon. Pretty girls too, and even the impoverished people have so much happiness from what I saw. I walked across the whole country and never once felt unsafe.
