I'm going through this right now. The company I work for was recently bought out by an investment group. I used to get 10-15 hours of overtime every week. One of the first things they did was cut overtime. They're also cutting pay and increasing productivity benchmarks. Now working only 40 hours a week, my money is quite a bit tighter.

Yeah it's kind of shit, I make $20 an hour, work 40 regular + 0-5 hours of overtime a week, paying only federal tax (no state income tax), and it STILL only being just enough to keep 2 people housed and fed with house, car, bills, and food with almost nothing going towards savings. There are several causes for the current problems we have with wages at the moment

1. Women in the workforce

When you double the amount of people working you are going to take hits to salary.

2. Illegals in the workforce

As above but these fuckers don't pay taxes and get benefits.

3. Unions and political corruption

A lot of jobs in this country were held onto because of number of votes said people would bring to a political party. While our economy has shifted away from a manufacturing based one to a service based one, a large part of our workforce did move with it and they only have their jobs still because of Unions and politicians to keep their income/voting base.

If these people were educated/trained to do different professions we wouldn't have as many problems as we do today.
