It’s hard because it mimics healthy cells. In most cancers the only material difference between a cancer cell and a healthy cell of the same tissue is that the cancer cell doesn’t die on it’s own (apoptosis). So we have to destroy the cancer cells. Some focal therapies exist that exploit the presence of enzymes, such as in prostate cancer, to destroy only cancer cells. But the big reason we can’t guarantee it doesn’t come back is because of cancer stem cells.
Say we treat a tumor with chemo. That won’t destroy the stem cells. What happens is those stem cells relocate and start tumors elsewhere, additionally that tumor is treatment resistant.
Curing cancer would entail changing a core function of our biology at the DNA level. Only problem is that it’s fucking ancient. It’s not like we can just cut out a particular sequence and it’d be gone. You’d need to change so much you’re unlikely to succeed and very likely to fuck something up. But research is being done in that area.
Pharmas prefer to keep you alive. Dead people don’t spend money. You won’t be a customer if you die from your cancer.
