I do identify myself as American. When American's think of their ancestry, it's about where they came from, and their personal cultural heritage. They still call themselves American, they still believe in American values, and they don't actually actively call themselves "German American", but they recognize their origins. It's sort of like wallpaper to us. We know it's there, but it's not the foundation of our house.

This was all pretty strange to me, I moved in to the area. As per ties to the heritage, my family is primarily irish, it mainly influences the food we eat on holidays. I have an irish last name and my grandmother gave me a book about celtic mythology as a child. That is about as far as things went in my family.

Coincidentally, I'm of German descent and I've actually lived in Germany (born in the US though). Many people here wear a label based on where their ancestors immigrated from, so it's common to hear "I'm German" or "I'm Irish" or "I'm Polish" etc. It might sound ridiculous if you compare them with an actual German/Irishman/Pole but it's a different concept, more like what breed of human they are. Perhaps in their childhood someone asked them what they were so they got a quick reply from their parents, although I've noticed that "Irish" Catholics can be rather tribalistic and make it more a part of their children's upbringing. Also, the country has a few superficial events that reinforce their label once a year, for example green beer and shamrock stickers on St. Patrick's day and suddenly everyone is "Irish" etc. In contrast, you probably know better than I how in Europe you're identified by where you were born and what language you speak, which is why this entire thing sounds ridiculous. So far I've described only whites, with non-whites there's an added element of fear of "whitewashing" where they try to walk a tightrope of assimilating enough to succeed while remaining distinct but of course it's an impossible task.

Had some people move in next door a while back. My family are hill billys living in the Appalachian mountains. Due to the US census records that have been kept and listed every person in a household at the time the record was took, I was able to trace my family back easily by cross referencing birth, death, and marriage records. While my family have always lived in the same area since the early 1800s- in the Applachian mountains, they emigrated to the US around 1700 From Germany and Holland (Back when it was just colonies and not the US yet) and were wealthy fur traders with 2 slaves. The originally lived around New York then moved to South Carolina and finally settled in the Virginia/West Virginia area. Since they were living in extremely rural area in the Appalachian mountains, they were cut off from the rest of society and didn't have access to outsiders to form relationships with, so they paired with family members (such as cousins) to marry and breed, all the way up to the 1960s. My heritage/family tree is one straight line from about 1760 all the way up to about 1960. The culture has stayed pretty much the same in the area I live, because outsiders hardly venture here and we hardly ever leave our hollers, so it shouldn't be a shock to see Americans celebrating their heritage of German, Holland, Irish and Italian in areas like mine, where that is all the culture we have known, and it has evolved over the years of isolation. The funny thing about German, Holland and Irish people is many of the things that the hillbillys do, no longer are a part of the current ethnicity culture because of the things I listed above. Like family getting together to bury a relative. All the men gather to dig the grave while all the women gather to cook. We hold the wake at the family members house with the casket in the living room and talk/drink/mourn the loss. Then the next morning the pallbearers carry the casket out of the house to the hearse straight to the family church to be preached over for the funeral.
